Historical background to Premantura
The first settlers in Premantura, who reached the place while fleeing from the Turkish invasion in Dalmatia in the 14th and 15th century, are of Dalmatian origin. The site was build on the remains of the old Illyrian-Roman colony, and is mentioned as early as 1300. In the near vicinity the remains of the roman villa rusticas and the statues of Minerva that are kept in theMuseum of Archaeology in Pula. Rt Kamenjak, which gave the name to Premantura (promontorio being Italian for rt, a small rift), is situated south from Premantura.
